Join us for an engaging one-hour panel that delves into social justice through the empowering framework of Adlerian psychology. This session will explore the interconnectedness of individuals within their social contexts and the importance of fostering community feeling (Gemeinschaftsgefühl) and social interest.

Our experienced panelists will discuss systemic inequities, the role of societal influences, and strategies for advocating for equality and mutual respect. Attendees will learn about personal and collective responsibility in promoting social justice, develop critical thinking skills for analyzing social issues, and discover practical approaches for implementing effective solutions. This panel is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of social justice, enhance empathy, and commit to actions that contribute to a more equitable society.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand how societal norms, values, and beliefs impact individual behavior and opportunities, recognizing the role of social context in shaping experiences.
  2. Learn ways to promote Social Interest and encourage actions that reflect a commitment to the well-being of others and the community, emphasizing the importance of contributing to the common good.
  3. Understand the importance of collective action in addressing social injustices, and develop skills for effective collaboration and community organizing.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Systemic Inequities and Social Context: The panel will highlight the importance of examining societal norms, values, and power dynamics that contribute to social injustices, and how these factors impact individual behavior and opportunities.
  • Fostering Community Feeling and Social Interest: Emphasis will be placed on the Adlerian concept of community feeling (Gemeinschaftsgefühl) and social interest. Panelists will discuss how cultivating empathy, social connectedness, and a commitment to the common good can drive meaningful social change and promote a sense of belonging and mutual support within communities.
  • Advocacy for Equality and Mutual Respect: Panelists will explore ways to promote practices that support social justice, and the importance of creating an environment of mutual respect that values diverse perspectives and contributions.
  • Personal and Collective Responsibility: The panel will highlight the role of individual actions in promoting social justice, as well as the power of collective action and community organizing in creating sustainable change.


PANELISTS

Bengü Ergüner-Tekinalp, Ph.D. – Professor of Counseling at Drake University. She is a cultural nomad, native of Turkiye who values interconnectedness with all beings, land, nature, and the cosmos (gemeinschaftsgefühl). She’s passionate about creating we-spaces, avoiding othering, and promoting healthy and safe dialogue for everyone. She integrates contemplative practices in her teaching and work. She is a Diplomate in Adlerian Psychology, has the certificate of Adlerian Studies, Honorary Certificate in Adlerian Psychotherapy and she is a Licensed School Counselor, Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, and Intercultural Development Inventory Qualified Administrator. Her research interests are Adlerian and humanistic theory and therapy, mindfulness, positive psychology, multicultural counseling, and school counseling. She has written many journal articles and book chapters, has an edited book in press and has written four books in her native language, Turkish.

Corey Frantz, LCPC – (he/they) is a licensed counselor and doctoral candidate from Adler University. As a counselor, Corey focuses on community building through community mental health and juvenile justice. As an adjunct, Corey integrates Adlerian principles through teaching and supervision. Through an Adlerian lens, Corey seeks to cultivate a sense of belonging among students, peers, colleagues, and people across all walks of life.

Dr. Kimberly M. Martin, Psy.D. – Is a licensed clinical psychologist and a co-chair of the Social Justice Section of the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology (NASAP). With a deep commitment to promoting social justice, she integrates Adlerian principles to address systemic inequities and foster community feeling (Gemeinschaftsgefühl). Dr. Martin’s work emphasizes a social justice and intersectional approach, empowering individuals and communities through her private practice in Washington, D.C. She is dedicated to creating environments that encourage equality, mutual respect, and social interest, reflecting her advocacy for holistic well-being and community engagement. 

Natasha Nelson – Certified Positive Discipline Educator(CPDE), veteran, disability advocate, and Neurodivergent mother to two autistic Black girls. Natasha has over seven years of exemplary leadership in the United States Army, over 5 years using Positive Discipline, and over a decade of experience public speaking and facilitating.

Moderated by Aisha Pope, LCSW – Positive Discipline Lead Trainer and HOPE Champion. She is the Director of Foster Care Services at San Diego Center for Children overseeing home and residential based behavioral wellness services. Aisha serves on the board of the Positive Discipline Association as well as the California Association for Infant Mental Health.

CANCELLATION POLICY

  • A full refund (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given when the request for a refund is made up to 30 days prior to conference date.
  • Refunds are not available for cancellations less than 30 days before the conference date. However, paid registrants can transfer to future PDA online events.
  • Refunds are not available after a transfer is made or if you do not provide advanced notice that you will not be attending the event. 
  • Participants will be notified by email if for any reason the event is cancelled.
