Facilitator Information: 

Julia Tomes has a Masters of Arts in Teaching in Elementary and Secondary education and has been working in education in a variety of settings for thirty years. She is also trained in Montessori Education for pre-primary. She has taught grades 5-8 in Oregon Public Schools as well as Montessori preschool. For the past 12 years she has been teaching workshops and courses for parents and teachers in the Positive Discipline approach as a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer. In addition to her work with families, she has been helping administrations and teachers rework systems, from a whole school perspective, to be more equitable, democratic, and trauma informed. Julia's most important work has been raising her two children.


Workshop Description:  This two-day interactive workshop is designed for teachers, counselors, school staff and administrators who want an effective discipline approach that integrates social and emotional learning while reducing challenging student behaviors. Attendees will earn recognition as a Certified Positive Discipline Classroom Educator and will learn to: 

  1. Develop a large teaching toolbox of kind and firm discipline approaches. 
  2. Establish explicit classroom structures and procedures. 
  3. Create an equitable classroom community based on mutual respect. 
  4. Understand the motivation behind students' misbehavior and how to encourage positive change. 
  5. Facilitate effective class meetings teaching social skills and problem-solving. 
  6. Learn Positive Discipline/Adlerian Psychology for use in the classroom and school community.

Any of us face new behavior challenges as we navigate life with COVID – 19, and teachers and counselors may find themselves discouraged and depleted. This two-day interactive workshop is designed for teachers, counselors, school staff, and administrators who are looking to boost their energy, renew their love for working with children, increase connection with colleagues and students and learn new practical strategies. Positive Discipline is an effective discipline approach based on Adlerian Psychology, that integrates social and emotional learning while reducing challenging student behaviors. Attendees will earn recognition as a Certified Positive Discipline Classroom Educators.

The Positive Discipline Association is pleased to provide the opportunity for educators to earn graduate-level university credit. Whether you attend one of our live workshops or participate in an online workshop, you may choose to earn 1 to 4 non-degree credits. These credits are for licensure renewal and salary step increases only. The cost of graduate-level credit is separate from the workshop registration fee. Click Here for more information.

Positive Discipline Association courses approved for Graduate-Level Semester Credits through University of the Pacific will appear on an Official Transcript with a letter grade.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: Workshop Registrations: A full refund (minus a $35 processing fee) will be given when the request for a refund is made up to 30 days prior to the first day of a workshop. Refunds are not available for cancellations less than 30 days before a workshop. However, paid registrants can transfer to another workshop within one year at no additional cost. Refunds are not available after a transfer is made or if you do not provide advanced notice that you will not be attending the workshop. 

In the event of cancellation, participants will be notified by email.
