Positive Discipline - Social Situations FAQ

Difficulty in Social Situations

“My 3.5-year-old daughter gets very upset when visiting other people’s homes, crying hysterically despite being outgoing elsewhere. I want her to cope with these feelings without being antisocial. What strategies can help?”

— Grace, Concerned Parent

Penny Davis explains:

  • This fear is relatively new and may stem from a specific incident or subtle experiences that stuck in her memory.
  • Children may feel anxiety about embarrassment or making mistakes, especially in unfamiliar environments.
  • The goal is to combine support and clear limits so she feels loved but guided.
  • Plan ahead: let her know where you are going and how long the visit will last, and stick to the plan.
  • Ask curiosity questions: “What will make this easier for you?” or “Is there a toy or item that might help you feel comfortable?”
  • Set clear limits: e.g., if she wants to be carried, define a short duration and follow through.
  • Validate feelings: allow her to feel nervous, upset, or anxious while teaching coping skills.
  • Communicate confidence: assure her that you have faith in her ability to handle the situation successfully.
